School History

In 1850, the first classroom was established in Talent at Fort Wagner - 4 students were enrolled. Mt. Vernon School, a 16'x32' pine log structure was completed in 1854 and used by the community for social gatherings and Sunday School. During the next 45 years many schools were built, mainly in the form of log cabins or old lumber yard sheds all over Talent. Three of them remain. One is the Talent Community Center, located in downtown Talent. It was completed in 1899 and used as a 1st-8th grade school. In 1911 a three-story brick building was built on the site of the present Talent Elementary round and gym, housing 1st- 12th grades. The round building as we know it, was not completed until 1974.

Since 1955, Talent Elementary has had 12 principals. The staff continues to be involved with the community. Many of the teachers live within the district and have their children enrolled in our schools. TES has built itself into a strong, happy, safe, and supportive environment for both students and staff. It boasts an excellent dual language program at all grade levels. The future strength of Talent Elementary School lies in celebrating its unique diversity and continuing to work, in partnership, with the community to implement the 21st Century Schools Act.
